DCC Dark Tower Recap #8

Leveling up and Nicklaus is the night’s surprise MVP.

Shit. I wrote that last sentence 18 days ago and now I have to remember the rest. It was just a small note, not intended to see the light of day. I should run to my handy notebook for details.

[grabs lil moleskin]

[frantic look of desperation, followed by look of slight relief]

Ok. Found some scant notes, although encoded in a shorthand that makes me rethink my note taking. But I believe I can proceed.

In short, an attempted ambush by Avvakris and his thugs resulted in an ass whooping so monumental on the bad guys it could make you believe Mitra himself manifested in Jim’s dice rolls. After infiltrating the manor, the party had decided it was time to explore the stairway near their initial point of entrance. Never mind why they didn’t notice the stairway before, it was certainly not a DM mishap.

*ahem*

The party, invigorated by their recent successes and lust for revenge, went up the stairs and into a room. The door was not trapped, but somebody rolled really high on a surprise check and noticed Seth the Huge and Wormgear Bonegnawer on either side of the door. Avvakris himself was seated confidently in front of the party at the back of the room. His confidence was betrayed by a series of good rolls by the PCs and bad rolls by me.

I remember that Wormgear tried to Mighty Deed himself out the window with a badly beaten Avvakris. He fumbled. The result was he flung Avvakris out the window (further mangling him) and he ran into the wall. Classic.

The night’s watch, drawn by the general alarm of the manor, were thwarted. Seth and Wormgear were slain. The party was left with a decision to be made in the next session: do we kill or question Avvakris?

Oh, and as noted at the top Nicklaus became the Greatest Wizard In The Known Universe for a time. The embodiment of the Eternal Champion, if you want to get all Moorcockian about it. He could not roll under 20 for any check, I swear. Sleep is a killer spell in DCC when you roll like he did. Given old Nick’s terrible rolling in the past, he was probably due for a good night. This fucking guy lost every spell he would cast for a while there. He spent way too much time approaching problems with a “halberd first” attitude. But believe me when I tell you he raised a righteous fury against Avvakris and his minions this session.

So there we go. A short description of the night and enough to get started next session.
